Dive into the world of miniatures and uncover the hidden stories they tell through playful symbols.
About this Event

Miniatures often communicate what children or adults cannot yet express through words. Whether chosen intentionally or intuitively, symbolic figures, objects, and landscapes reveal themes of attachment, identity, protection, loss, resilience, conflict, and hope. This training explores how clinicians can recognize recurring symbolic patterns within miniature play and sand tray experiences while remaining grounded in the child's unique developmental, cultural, and personal meaning-making. Participants will deepen their understanding of symbolic expression, learn to avoid overinterpretation, and discover practical ways to support children's stories through developmentally responsive play therapy interventions.

Drawing from play therapy theory, attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, developmental psychology, symbolism, and trauma-informed practice, participants will learn how to ethically recognize symbolic themes and utilize play-based interventions that foster emotional expression, therapeutic insight, resilience, and narrative integration.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common symbolic themes expressed through miniatures in play therapy and describe how these themes may reflect children's developmental, emotional, relational, and trauma-related experiences.
  • Explain how attachment, neurodevelopment, culture, and life experiences influence children's symbolic use of miniatures during play therapy.
  • Demonstrate at least three play therapy interventions that utilize miniatures and symbolic play to facilitate emotional expression, meaning-making, and therapeutic exploration.
  • Apply developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive play therapy techniques to ethically interpret and respond to symbolic themes while supporting resilience, self-awareness, and narrative integration.
