Unnested: Exploring the Parts We Carry
About this Event
We carry many versions of ourselves into the therapy room, the self that functions, the self that protects, the self that remembers, the self that hides, the self that cares for everyone else, the self that wants connection, and the self that is still becoming.
Unnested: Exploring the Parts We Carry is an experiential training that uses nesting dolls, sand tray, miniatures, art, symbolism, and storytelling to explore the layered nature of self. Participants will learn creative ways to help clients externalize internal experiences, understand protective responses, explore relationships between parts, recognize developmental and relational influences, and create greater communication among different aspects of self.
Rather than searching for a single “true self” underneath all the others, Unnested invites clinicians and clients to become curious about each layer: What does it carry? What does it protect? What does it need? And what happens when it finally has enough room to be seen?
Learning Objectives:
- Describe how developmental experiences, attachment relationships, trauma, culture, identity, and life transitions can contribute to the development of different parts or layers of self.
- Identify at least four symbolic themes associated with protective, vulnerable, hidden, relational, and emerging parts in nesting-doll and sand tray work.
- Demonstrate at least four expressive interventions using nesting dolls, sand tray, miniatures, art, and storytelling to facilitate exploration of parts.
- Apply trauma-responsive strategies for working with internal conflict, protective responses, and vulnerable material without forcing disclosure, interpretation, or integration.
- Demonstrate how symbolic distance, placement, containment, and relational positioning of nesting dolls and miniatures can be used to explore communication, conflict, protection, and connection among different parts of self.
