About this Event
The Highlands and the Forty-Five
From the raising of the Jacobite standard at Glenfinnan to the battle on Drumossie Moor, the connection of the Highlands to the Forty-Five is well established in our cultural memory. This talk will explore the lesser-known story of how the Forty-Five unfolded in the Highlands, investigating the attempts of both the Jacobite and British armies to maximise recruitment from a region defined by kinship and divided loyalties. It will also examine the campaign of irregular warfare undertaken in the region by Highland Independent Companies and militia troops as they sought to prevent Jacobites marching south to join the main army.
Nicola Martin is a military historian, specialising in eighteenth-century British imperialism and Jacobitism. Her first book The British Army in Scotland and North America 1745-1775: militarisation on the fringes of the empire was published by Palgrave in 2025 and demonstrated the impact of the Jacobite Rising of 1745-46 on British imperialism in North America prior to the American Revolution.
