The Culloden Night March

On the night of the 15th of April 1746, the Jacobite army launched a daring night attack on the government camp in Nairn. This required a hard march accross uncertain terrain in the dark which proved too much for the depleted Jacobite force.

With no attack made, the Jacobites returned towards Culloden, drained from the campaign and the exertions of what would become known as the Night March. They would find themselves now facing the government forces at the Battle of Culloden.

On the night of the 15th of April 2023 the team at Culloden Battlefield launched their own Night March to follow the trail of the Jacobite army, exploring the changes to the landscape and the challenges of night-time manouvers.

Join us at Culloden Battlefield at 13:00 Wednesday 15th of April, the 280th anniversery for a talk with one of the co-ordinators of the 2023 march who will go into the details of both the original march and offer their unique insights of what it was like to carry out the journey.
