Countries are defended by ideas, as well as men and resources. Mjr General Mick Ryan explores Australia's challenges in an age of innovation
About this Event

Major General Mick Ryan AM is a soldier scholar. He breaks the rule that those who can't do teach. In 35 years in the military he commanded at platoon, squadron, regiment, task-force and brigade levels in East Timor, Iraq and southern Afghanistan.

Then for four years he led a significant reform of the Australian Defence College.

Who better to educate us all on the challenges in the current military environment, which are monumental. Our defence doctrine has been based around integration into international, mostly US forces. But the US appears to now think its allies should be ready to fight on their own. Just how ready are we?

After this function you'll be in a better position to answer that question, and many others. You'll also have had a good time with friends, new friends and colleagues.

Mick is retired from the army and currently dispenses his wisdom from his Substack , in between being a Senior Fellow at the Lowy Institute and an Adjunct Fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. He has a PhD and is a Distinguished Graduate of the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and a graduate of the USMC School of Advanced Warfighting. In 2012, he graduated with distinction from the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies.
