The Fundaments of Life-Writing: 4 week course
About this Event
This four week course guides participants in developing a strong foundation for their life writing. Filled with information and guided exercises, our aim is for you to have a firm beginning to your life writing if you are just starting, and a strong understanding of how to navigate the challenges and pitfalls of life writing for all writers.
Week 1 - Where do I start?
Monday, June 29 (10am - noon)
We begin with developing a good structure and guide you into coming up with a strong outline for your own story.
Week 2 - What is a good memoir?
Wednesday, July 8 (10am - noon)
Here we guide you in exploring and understanding what makes a memoir powerful, including the importance of understanding concepts such as ‘the golden thread’.
Week 3 - Understanding the legalities
Monday, July 13 (10am - noon)
Unlike fictional stories, life writing explores real people's lives. And that means we need to understand the key legal considerations which can land writers in court if they're not careful. An important week to attend -- and guided by Patricia Sutcliffe, far less dry than you might think.
Week 4 - My book is ready, what do I do now?
Monday, July 20 (10am - noon)
Edwin Rydberg of Quantum Dot Press guides you through modern publishing options (and pitfalls) and introduces some options for promotion - including those being developed by Life Writing Studio specifically for the everyday life writer.
What to expect
The course is designed to blend teaching with audience participation through the use of examples and exercises. The four weeks are designed primarily to ensure writers gain confidence and the momentum to put pen to paper.
