The Forgotten Occupation: Jim Crow Goes To Haiti

The current social climate both in Haiti and the United States is without doubt affecting the large and diverse Haitian community of Queens. Many Haitians around the Queens are now find themselves with their legal status in limbo and facing the dire prospect of returning to a Haiti that they certainly can't survive in.
The media's coverage of this dicey and fragile moment is severely lacking as it fails to give context to the fraught historical relationship between Haiti and the United States, a relationship wrought in exploitation, coercion and high handed political pressure of the former by the latter.
The Forgotten Occupation, which mediates on Haiti's occupation by the United States at the height of the American Jim Crow period, is a documentary for the current moment. It traces the road Haiti has been forced to travel to arrive at this perilous moment, one that has upended the lives of more than 300,00 Haitians here and millions more at home.
The screening will be followed with a Q&A with director Alain Martin and activist Kerbie Joseph.
We are asking for $10 suggested donations to help us cover the space rental but no one is to be turned away at the door. Seating begins at 6:30 and the fim screens at 7.
