The Forest Remembers
About this Event
The Forest Remembers
Join us at The Bowery Poetry Club on Tue August 25 for The Forest Remembers, an evening of music, poetry, and film that centers the revitalization of heritage and land. The event features offerings by Afro-Caribbean artists and artisans; among them, a performance by reggae singer-songwriter Taj Weekes, a preview of a short film, Fairweather Wilds, and other inspiring works exploring land lineages.
About The Forest Remembers
The campaign will activate community stewardship, combat the loss of historical memory, and enable families to recreate their narratives.
We begin this work with a short film and an eco-music soundscape, with nature sounds recorded in the vital five-to-six-mile strip connecting the Maya Mountain forests in the north and south of Belize. We will build it through community activations and education.
The Belize Maya Forest is a critical habitat for wildlife and carbon sequestration, spanning an estimated 37,000 to 50,000 acres. Centuries of colonial timber extraction degraded not only Belizean forests, but the cultural heritage held within them. Over 65% of the forest's original cover has been lost to agricultural expansion and logging, placing native wildlife at severe risk of isolation and extinction. Your support affirms the vital role of culture and narratives in creating sustainable futures.
Supporters receive a gift bag including organic chocolate from the Belizean rainforest and items from local artisans.
