4th–5th July 2026 – The Ellis Journey returns in 2026 with an exciting new format and a spectacular weekend celebrating the spirit of early motoring. Join us on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July 2026 for a two-day adventure that brings history, heritage, and camaraderie to life — with beautiful routes, charming stop-offs, and plenty of entertainment along the way.The Ellis Journey is a celebration of the very first documented car journey made in the UK, in 1895, by the Hon Evelyn Ellis and his passenger Fredrick Simms.
This year, we’re introducing a brand-new beginning to the journey! Our adventure will start from the picturesque village of Datchet, where participants can enjoy the Datchet Village Fair before being waved off on the start of The Ellis Journey 2026.
From Datchet, our route will take in some of Berkshire’s most beautiful countryside, winding through Sonning, passing Donnington Castle, and featuring stop-offs along the way. including the Nature Discovery Centre, the world-famous Bombay Sapphire Distillery, and a relaxing country pub lunch before arriving in Micheldever.
The evening will feature dinner and entertainment and a chance for participants to unwind, socialise, and celebrate the journey so far.
On Sunday 5th July, we’ll depart Micheldever and retrace the original Ellis Journey route back to Datchet — honouring the pioneering 1895 trip that helped mark the beginning of motoring in Britain. The weekend will conclude with a grand display on Datchet Green, where spectators can enjoy live entertainment, exhibitors, and refreshments as we celebrate the vehicles’ triumphant return.
