Part true crime, part investigative journalism, and part cultural history, The Ego Trip traces the extraordinary rise of 5-MeO-DMT ("toad medicine") from obscure psychedelic sacrament to global phenomenon. Kimon will be joined in conversation by acclaimed journalist Shayla Love for a fireside discussion about this new book, followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. KIMON DE GREEF is a freelance journalist and researcher from South Africa. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Guardian, Guernica, National Geographic, and other publications. He is the coauthor of Poacher: Confessions from the Abalone Underworld and has written widely on illicit trades. He has a master's degree in conservation biology from the University of Cape Town and a master's in journalism from New York University. He lives in Cape Town, South Africa.
Shayla Love is a science journalist based in Brooklyn, and a staff writer at Psyche and The Guardian. She writes primarily about science, health, and psychology, and she is interested in the moments when history, culture, and philosophy interact with present day research. She has a master's degree in science journalism from Columbia University, and her work has also appeared in The New Yorker, Scientific American, Vice, The New Republic, Harper's, Wired, and more.

In 2012, a Mexican doctor announced that he had revived a forgotten indigenous ritual: smoking the secretions of the Sonoran Desert toad, which releases a potent psychedelic substance known as “the God molecule.” The drug, which often induced states of ego death and the sensation of being directly connected with the divine, had remarkable effects on those suffering from PTSD, depression, and drug addiction.
