Existential crises are like a persistent rash. There's no cure, but if you're suffering from the Big Questions, maybe the How To Be Book Club can be a salve. Come hang out in Book Club Bar's back garden one Saturday each month, and join us in discussing works of philosophical fiction from across different eras and parts of the globe. We'll read the book beforehand (and do us a solid, if you can—get your book from our store), and then gather for casual conversation over drinks. No preparation needed; just bring your book and your curious mind!

This September, we'll explore rumor, conspiracy, and disinformation through our reading of The Hounding by Xenobe Purvis. Oft compared to The Crucible and The Virgin Suicides since its release last year, The Hounding tells the story of an 18th century, rural English town, the inhabitants of which are convinced that their neighbors--five sisters--are turning into dogs at night. The Origins of Totalitarianism was German-American historian and political philosopher Hannah Arendt's first major work, and it will invite us to think not only about the mechanics of rumor, conspiracy and disinformation, but how they are weaponized by autocrats towards political ends.
