A World in Hysteria: Curtin’s Theatre Arts Present Arthur Miller’s THE CRUCIBLETheatre Arts invites audiences into the pressure cooker of 17th-century Salem with a visceral new production of Arthur Miller’s masterpiece, The Crucible. Directed by Helen Trenos, the production runs from April 21–25, 2026 at the Hayman Theatre.
Written in 1953 as a searing response to the McCarthy-era communist paranoia, Miller’s play explores the Salem witch trials of 1692. Today, in a world dominated by 24-hour news cycles and social media echo chambers, the play’s themes of scapegoating, political fear-mongering, and the erosion of truth remain startlingly relevant.
Director Helen Trenos notes that while the play is set in the late 1600s, its resonance in 2026 is undeniable.
"Salem in the 17th century was a place where fear was used as a tool to control a society and where truth is rendered impotent. Sound familiar?" says Trenos. “As Miller himself said, this play is either a warning of tyranny on the way or a reminder of tyranny just past."
