Moon at The Revival House Perth
Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is nearing the end of his three-year contract working alone on a lunar mining base, extracting helium-3 to send back to an energy-starved Earth. His only companion is GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), an artificial intelligence that assists with daily operations and monitors his health. With just two weeks until he can return home to his wife and daughter, Sam begins experiencing hallucinations and headaches—symptoms he attributes to isolation and longing. After a rover accident leaves him injured, Sam awakens in the infirmary to discover something impossible: another version of himself. As the two Sams piece together the truth about the mining operation and their own existence, they uncover a corporate conspiracy that forces them to confront devastating questions about identity, humanity, and what it means to be alive.
Director Duncan Jones announces himself as a major talent with this cerebral 2009 science fiction gem made for a fraction of typical sci-fi budgets. Working with miniatures, practical effects, and a single primary location, Jones creates a fully realized lunar world that feels tactile and lived-in rather than digital. Sam Rockwell delivers a tour-de-force performance, essentially acting opposite himself while creating distinct personalities for each Sam. The film's brilliance lies in its restraint—rather than action spectacle, Jones crafts a slow-burning mystery about corporate exploitation and what constitutes personhood. Clint Mansell's haunting score echoes the loneliness of Sam's existence, while Gary Shaw's production design draws inspiration from classic '70s sci-fi. GERTY's smiley-face interface and calm demeanor create deliberate echoes of HAL 9000, keeping audiences guessing about its true loyalties in this deeply humanistic exploration of isolation and consciousness.
