The Coil-loquium

We’re using coils as a powerful entry point to celebrate Black voice, literature, and creative expression—showing girls that their hair, their stories, and their perspectives all belong in writing and in print. In partnership with Taji Cooper’s national literacy tour, this free event invites girls to explore culture, identity, and self-expression through a series of engaging, hands-on experiences.

Info: 17-year-old author Taji Cooper will lead a discussion on her book All the Voices in Room 12, exploring themes of culture, identity, and voice in the classroom. Students will have the opportunity to engage with the text by reading selected excerpts, sharing their thoughts, and asking questions in an interactive and supportive space.

Info: Girls will dive into hair health and get hands-on practicing cute, simple textured styles on curly-haired doll heads. It’s fun, interactive, and all about building real skills—so they can care for their curls, show up to school with confidence, and feel proud of their hair, especially in the classroom.
