Tending the Light: A Mindfulness Series for Turbulent Times
About this Event
Tending the Light: A Mindfulness Series for Turbulent Times
A few months ago, our speaker, Yoga and Meditation Teacher Alyssa Lauren Stone was followed on a walk in her neighborhood by a man who told her she didn't look like she belonged. What allowed her to pause, respond with calm, and walk away intact wasn't luck. It was practice. Years of it.
This four-session practicum series is rooted in the Vipassana (Insight) meditation tradition and offered in collaboration with Therapin*y, a Filipino community organization whose members include psychotherapists, energy healers, yoga teachers, and community members. Each 60-minute session combines guided meditation, a dharma talk, and live Q&A.
What makes this series distinct
It isn't only the curriculum. It's who is teaching it. As a Filipino immigrant who has navigated the inherited wounds of colonization, racial injustice, and the particular exhaustion of moving through the world in a body that others make assumptions about, Alyssa Lauren is not teaching these tools from a distance. She is teaching them from the inside. You'll be guided by someone who may look like you, has lived what you've lived, and has found — through this very practice — a steadiness that no external circumstance can take away.
Rooted in kapwa
The Filipino concept of kapwa — shared self, or interconnectedness — is woven throughout as a cultural touchpoint that naturally supports the Vipassana understanding of interdependence.
What you'll walk away with
By the end of this series, you'll have the foundational tools to meet turbulent times without being consumed by them.
