Just a few notches below a unicorn or snow leopard on the rarity scale, Tea Leaf Green only emerges these days in tune with particular celestial alignments. They were last seen in Nevada County back in October at the area’s most mystical outdoor venue, Rosebud Ranch. The effect they had on the crowd that night made it very clear that the band has only become more irresistible over time. The thought of putting them inside the Crazy Horse for two nights is akin to having the ’87 Lakers play your high school gymnasium.
Coming up in the early 2000s, Tea Leaf Green experienced a meteoric rise fueled by jaw-dropping performances and crafty, original songwriting. During their peak era, selling out the Fillmore was among the feathers in their cap. There’s a bewitching quality to that signature Tea Leaf sound. We’re talking about an interwoven, groove-based foundation of spellbinding rock ‘n roll, Americana soul, cosmic blues, funky forays and soaring jams. The level of musicianship sneaks up on you with its collective force. This effect has only gotten stronger with the band’s “core three” still operating on frequencies that are quite possibly illegal in certain states.
Guitarist Josh Clark has always been seen as a prodigy, with an unearthly ability to move mountains and redirect rivers and streams. He has that “it-factor,” where the whole atmosphere seems to shift once the ideas start tumbling from his fingers. An annual heavyweight contributor to High Sierra Music Festival’s Guitarmageddon, Josh is the epitome of a humble guitar hero. These days he’s more likely to be found coaching his son’s little league baseball team in Oregon than on a stage. However, like the players from Field of Dreams, if you build it, he will come.
Naturally the guitarist takes centerstage, but in this band, the keyboardist is the straw that stirs the drink. If you know Trevor Garrod, then you realize that he is one of the most original songwriters of his generation. His wizardry of wordplay matched with extraordinary playing frames him as a mysterious genius operating largely below the radar. A cooler and rootsier version of Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, his creativity is the essence of the TLG sound. This band has some of the most passionate fans you’ll see and watching them swoon over Trevor’s songs is part of the joy of the whole experience.
Continuing the collective theme of humble, mild-mannered, superhero musicians, Scotty Rager’s drumming cannot be overlooked. Anyone who has seen him with Tea Leaf or his improvisational Paul Simon side project, Bone Diggers (also a fan favorite at Rosebud Ranch and Phish after-parties at Cervantes in Denver), knows that he lives in the groove pocket and keeps the dancefloor well-greased. Punctuating this power quartet is the dynamite new bassist, Jojo Stancato. He could fit right in playing bass for a classic rock band like Credence while adding his own layers of intricacy to keep the fire burning throughout the night.
