Dearest Gentle Reader…
You are cordially invited to step aboard the HPH Train for an afternoon of romance, refinement, friendship and just a little Regency-era scandal!
This October, we are travelling back in time to the world of Jane Austen, where the drawing rooms of Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park come alive through beautiful china, delicate flavours, charming conversation and the timeless art of taking tea.
And while afternoon tea as we know it wasn't formally introduced until after Jane Austen's lifetime, tea itself was certainly no stranger to her world!
In fact, the word tea appears an astonishing 124 times throughout Austen's novels. We rather suspect that Jane and her family enjoyed many a cup in their Hampshire home, accompanied by good conversation and perhaps a delicious little nibble or two.
🥀 A Most Agreeable Menu
For this special afternoon, Chef Lulu is taking inspiration from the culinary traditions of Regency England.
It was a fascinating time in food history! Exotic fruits, spices and herbs were making their way into English kitchens, changing the way food was prepared, preserved and enjoyed.
From potted meats and candied fruits to preserves, olives and fragrant herbs, Regency tables were filled with unexpected flavours.
And then there were the wonderfully imaginative names!
Singing Hinnies, Toad in the Hole, Bubble and Squeak, Spotted Dick, Whim Wham and Eton Mess!
While we won't be serving every historical curiosity, we have dreamed up a delightful afternoon tea inspired by the flavours and traditions of the period.
Our Regency-inspired tea service will include:
🌸 Elegant assorted tea sandwiches
🥀 Delicate savouries inspired by Regency kitchens
🍰 Miniature sweet delights
🫖 Freshly baked scones with cream and our house-made preserves
🍓 A traditional Regency-inspired trifle
All lovingly prepared in-house by Chef Lulu and the HPH kitchen team, with the exception of our sandwich bread.
And yes, we are always happy to share a recipe or two… although our famous scones remain a closely guarded HPH secret! 😉
🫖 Tea, Naturally!
Your afternoon includes bottomless, expertly brewed teas, thoughtfully curated by our tea master to complement the flavours of the day.
Expect beautiful vintage china, proper table linens and all the little details that make Afternoon Tea on the Train such a memorable experience.
For those who fancy something a little more spirited, our bar will also offer a selection of specially designed cocktails and bubbly available for purchase.
💌 Dress for the Occasion!
Calling all Bennet sisters, Dashwood romantics and admirers of Mr. Darcy!
We would LOVE to see our guests embrace the spirit of the Regency era.
Think empire-waist gowns, pearls, lace, floral dresses, ribbons, bonnets and a little English countryside elegance.
Dressing up is never mandatory, but it certainly adds to the magic!
🚂 One More Journey Before Our Next Chapter
As we prepare to close the doors of our current Hamilton Prop House home at the end of October, Tea & Sensibility will be among our final Afternoon Teas aboard the train at 422 Barton Street East.
These afternoons have become such a cherished part of our HPH community, and we can't think of a lovelier way to celebrate friendship, imagination and the joy of gathering together.
Our train may not actually move, but we promise to transport you somewhere wonderful.
