Te Reo Tautito – He Pō Puoro
With Lisa Davies & Te Kurawhiti Hitchens
Join us for an evening of jazz, waiata, and te reo Māori with Te Reo Tautito. Lisa Davies Kāi Tahu and Te Kurawhiti Hitchens, Ngāti Porou, Ngāi Tūhoe will perform a set of modern jazz and R&B, all translated into te reo Māori. Through these reimagined songs, they celebrate the beauty and depth of te reo Māori and the ways it connects us through sound, story, and whakapapa.
Te Reo Tautito is a community kaupapa founded by jazz pianist and composer Lisa Davies. Through translation, composition and performance, the kaupapa brings jazz into conversation with te reo Māori, creating diverse and immersive musical experiences for our hapori in Ōtautahi.
Together, Lisa Davies—an auntie, jazz pianist and composer and Te Kurawhiti Hitchens—a māmā, singer, kaiako, and the reo waitī who breathes life into the translations and performances of Te Reo Tautito, take us on a haerenga through sound.

This event forms part of Ihirangaranga: Creation & Connection, a multi-week programme presented by Te Whare Tapere from 13 August – 5 September. Drawing inspiration from the whakaaro of ihirangaranga, it explores understandings of sound as a source of connection, carrying memory and wellbeing across generations. Through music, movement and shared creative experiences, Ihirangaranga invites people to come together, listen, learn and explore the many ways sound connects us with one another, our communities and our stories.
Ngā mihi nui to the Farina Thompson Charitable Trust, proudly managed by Perpetual Guardian, for their generous support in making Ihirangaranga: Creation & Connection possible.
