Tambalan Project: Botanical Dye Workshop
About this Event
Botanical Dye Workshop with Dr Keireine Canavan and Artist Makiko Kita
An introductory botanical dyeing workshop to compare Welsh and Indonesia dyes with Dr Keireine Canavan and Makiko Kita.
The morning workshop will utilise grown dye sources from the Sustainable Growing Future Project at Cardiff School of Art & Design in Llandaff and Indonesian botanical material. Using Welsh wool and sourced silk, linen, and cotton fabrics, a small sample booklet will result as a memorable keepsake.
This workshop is part of the The Tambalan Project which brings together artists from Wales and Indonesia alongside local communities to explore disability rights, identity, care work and social equality through the power of art, reflection and conversation.
The project’s name is inspired by the Javanese tambal motif- an historic batik pattern of triangles and geometric grids meaning “to patch” or “to mend” to promote healing and restoration.
This workshop is made possible by funding awarded by Postcode Community Trust and raised by Postcode Lottery players, the wider Tambalan project has been funded by the Arts Council Wales and Wales Arts International.
The day is suitable for ages 16+ and admission is free but booking is required as spaces are limited.
