Talk: Lady Craven’s Travels Through the Crimea to Constantinople in 1786

This talk is about the travels of Lady Elizabeth Craven in 1786, a few years after her scandalous separation from William 6th Baron Craven and her departure from the family home Benham Park at Speen.
She wrote a charming, vivacious and well-informed account of her travels which takes the form of letters to her future husband the Margrave of Anspach and was written while she travelled in the company of her lover Henry Vernon.
A Journey Through the Crimea to Constantinople, charts Lady Craven’s travels across Russia, through the Crimea to Constantinople, also visiting the Greek Islands and Athens, travelling through the Balkans and finishing her journey in Vienna.
Dr Helen Lockhart is a local historian who over the years has given talks to various organizations on historical and art historical subjects. She has herself travelled widely and lived in the Middle East, the Far East and India. As an expat she studied with the Open University gaining a BA and MA in Art History, and an MA in Classical Studies, while she also has a PhD in History from Reading University.
