On Saturday, June 13, the Nebraska Humane Society at 8929 Fort Street will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. - as normal. In the lobby, a few steps to your left after opening the door, sits the legendary Cat Bench. You can sit on it, stand beside it, take a picture with it … and that’s about all your options.
The bench, created by John Kevern, is an extremely unique and eye-catching design that has withstood the test of time and become a permanent part of NHS.
Take a Picture with the Cat Bench Day has no registration, no fee and no catch. Just take a picture with the cat bench. If you want to upload it to social media and tag us, that’d be pretty cool too. While you’re here, you may as well say hello to some of our adoptable pets, including – you guessed it – cats!
Saturday, June 13, during normal operating hours.

People only, please!
What is the Cat Bench?
The real story: Designed in 2003, The bench was generously donated by the Lundgren family as part of a fundraiser for the Omaha Children’s Museum. It has been prominently displayed in the NHS entryway and lobby since.
The less real story: Centuries ago, before even the idea of a humane society was conceived, this mysterious seating apparatus was situated at what would someday be 90th and Fort Streets in Omaha, Nebraska. None know the exact origins of the Cat Bench, who created it, how it was made or even why. Some theorize aliens, and others say the bench itself is the center of the universe created around it. No matter, we know Cat Bench is here and it drew us to build an entire animal shelter to house it.
Over the years, many people have traveled from across the country, perhaps even the world, to see the Cat Bench. Some believe that touching the Cat Bench brings a year of good luck to all cats in the individual’s life, and taking a photo with the bench will culminate in a decade of cat fortune. Who are we to argue? While many of the bench’s origins remain a mystery, one aspect is inarguable: the bench is available in our lobby for cat lovers to see, touch, take a photo with and even utilize as a seat. All we – and the bench – ask is that you acknowledge its mysterious history and treat it with respect as a staple of Omaha lore.
