"The Vedic Universe: When Mathematical Principles Become Art"
Sharkie Lin 林峽宇
Mathematical Artist and Science Journalist
Have you ever wondered what mathematical principles would look like in the real world? Tonight, our speaker Sharkie Lin will share how a fascination with numbers evolved into a life-changing artistic journey. Building upon the ancient Indian mathematical concept of the Vedic square, Sharkie invented the mathematical principles of the Vedic cube. Through their Vedic Universe series, we will explore how making art using geometry can take us across dimensions, bridge the gap between rationality and sensibility, and visualize the beauty of mathematical creation.
SPEAKER BIO:
Sharkie Shia-Yu Lin (林峽宇) is an interdisciplinary mathematical artist, independent curator, museum planner, science writer, and educator. With a STEM background, they excel at transforming rational geometric logic into aesthetic art experiences featuring visual tension and spatial illusion. Sharkie's core research focuses on the Vedic cube. They developed its mathematical principles, published them in the academic paper Digital root patterns of three-dimensional space, and translated these rational numbers into mathematical art. The Vedic Universe series has been selected twice for the Bridges Conference, a leading global mathematical art exhibition, with their works showcased at the Finland (online) and Sweden editions. To celebrate the International Day of Mathematics, they held the solo exhibition Vedic Universe (吠陀宇宙) at Beholding Cell Art Space (看守所藝術空間) this March.
As a curator and museum planner, Sharkie contributed to the core exhibition planning for the National SciFuture Museum (國立科學未來館) and directed various interdisciplinary exhibitions. Furthermore, as an international science journalist, their writing specializes in interdisciplinary observation and covers topics such as mathematics, art, biology, profile interviews, and future-oriented museums. Their bylines can be found in publications like Science Monthly (科學月刊) and PanSci (泛科學). Recognized for their expertise, they were invited to cover prestigious events such as the Heidelberg Laureate Forum, the Hong Kong Laureate Forum, and the inaugural Computer Science Prize press events of The Shaw Prize. Sharkie holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and a Master's degree in Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering from National Cheng Kung University, and studied engineering and architecture at University College Dublin.
