TONIGHT:
Taipei Science Café, Episode 006
"A House Made of Mouse: Animal Architecture, Thermal Buffering, and Climate Resilience of the Burying Beetle"
Meet the burying beetle: a loving parent, and one of Taiwan's smallest civil engineers! In this talk, we'll explore how these remarkable insects bury and reshape animal carcasses into carefully crafted nurseries for their young, and ask a surprising question: could the shape of their brood ball be the beetle's secret weapon against climate change? From 3D scanning to the physics of heat, we'll follow the beetle's journey from birth to dead mouse to a cosy, temperature-controlled home — and discover what a tiny insect can teach us about surviving on a warming planet. Join River for a talk that will make you look at maggots and mold in a whole new way!
SPEAKER BIO:
River Basham (they/them)
Master's Student, National Taiwan University
River is a Master’s student in Climate Change and Sustainable Development at National Taiwan University, where they study whether burying beetles engineer spherical brood balls to protect their larvae from heat stress. They are originally from Canada, where they studied dominance hierarchies and foraging behaviours in albatross. When not thinking about bugs or birds, you can find them trying to decide which bug or bird to get tattooed next!
