"Doom, Gloom, and Hope for Corals in a Changing Climate"
In this talk we will take a dive into the amazing coral reefs of Taiwan! We will learn about the importance of corals to marine ecosystem function and human livelihoods — and gain insight into how climate change is impacting these important ecosystems. Specifically, we will explore how ocean warming is driving the loss and degradation of reefs globally, as well as discuss avenues of hope for the future of corals in Taiwan. Join us as our speaker Dr. Crystal McRae teaches us about our undersea natural treasures!
SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Crystal McRae
Assistant Professor, National Sun Yat-Sen University
Crystal is an assistant professor at National Sun Yat-sen University where she studies the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. Her research began in her home country (Canada) in frigid streams studying an endangered species of salmon. Then, seeking something a bit warmer, she shifted her focus to coral reef ecosystems with a specific interest in understanding thermal tolerance in corals.
