About this Event

Access to Justice: Whose responsibility is it?

Access to justice is fundamental to a fair and effective legal system. But ensuring that people can understand, navigate and access that system cannot be the responsibility of any one part of the legal profession.

So, whose responsibility is it?

This year's Susan Campbell Oration brings together four legal researchers for a panel discussion exploring our collective responsibility for access to justice, and the roles that the legal profession, courts, legal educators, community organisations, government and others can play in creating a more accessible and equitable justice system.

Held on the eve of the Victoria Law Foundation's International Access to Justice Conference, the discussion will feature speakers from the Conference program, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences to address one of the most pressing challenges facing justice systems worldwide.

Join us for an evening of thought-provoking conversation, followed by an opportunity to continue the discussion with fellow attendees over drinks and canapés.

About the Susan Campbell Oration

Susan Campbell AM was the first Professorial Fellow in Legal Practice at Monash University and, for 24 years, provided outstanding leadership to Monash Law's Clinical Legal Education Program. Through her commitment to clinical legal education, Susan inspired generations of teachers and students and championed the role that legal education can play in improving access to justice.

Since 2014, Monash Law has honoured Susan's legacy through the Susan Campbell Oration, bringing together leading thinkers, scholars and practitioners to explore important questions about clinical legal education, access to justice and the role of law in serving our communities.

Building on this legacy, the Oration continues to create a space for challenging conversations about how we can extend the reach and impact of legal education and practice, strengthen access to justice and consider our collective responsibility for a fair and accessible legal system.
