Welcome to this introduction to silent meditation. In this session, we begin by fully arriving in the body. We take a moment to find a posture that is both stable and relaxed—whether you are sitting on a cushion or a chair—with a softly straight back, relaxed shoulders, and hands resting naturally.Before we become still, we prepare the body with a few gentle stretching exercises. These small movements help release tension and invite a sense of ease, so that the body supports the mind rather than distracting it.
When we come to a standstill, we focus our attention on the breath. There is no need to control it; we simply observe the natural rhythm. The breath becomes an anchor, something we can always return to whenever the mind begins to wander. Every inhalation invites presence; every exhalation offers the chance to soften and let go.
In silent meditation, the mind will naturally produce thoughts, images, and distractions. This is not a problem to be solved, but a process we learn to understand. Mental training begins with recognizing when attention has wandered, and then gently bringing it back—again and again, with patience instead of judgment. Over time, this practice strengthens clarity and stability, and helps us to respond to what we experience with greater calmness and intention.
Finally, we open to a broader awareness. Instead of focusing narrowly, we allow attention to expand—so that we can observe sounds, sensations, and thoughts as they arise and disappear. Awareness remains constant throughout, like a silent background in which all experiences play out.
