Educators and partners explore Black Canadian history through the BLK docuseries, with filmmaker keynotes and hands-on curriculum workshops.
About this Event

This professional learning event brings together educators, administrators, and other representatives from independent/public schools and community organizations to explore Black Canadian history through the award-winning “BLK: An Origin Story” docuseries and the corresponding curriculum-aligned BLK learning materials. Keynote speakers - Film Directors Sudz Sutherland and Jen Holness will share their inspirational journey as Creators of the BLK docuseries. Interactive workshops introducing BLK learning materials for both elementary and secondary students will be facilitated by some of the educators who developed them.

New for 2026 - this launch introduces the addition of BLK learning materials developed for students in Grades 4-6 and built upon the success of the Gr. 7-12 BLK resources already in use in multiple school boards across Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Participants will walk away with an understanding of how BLK documentaries and resources can be used to deepen teaching and learning about Canadian Black history in both Elementary and Secondary education panels.

Program Summary*

9:30am to 10:00am - Registration, Refreshments, and Networking

10:00am to 12:30pm - Keynote, Workshops, and Dialogue

* The professional learning component will run for 2 1⁄2 hours in an adult-learning model.
