The 1984-85 Miners Strike was a pivotal moment in modern British history. Within a decade of the end of the strike, every mine on the Durham coalfield had been closed. But the Durham Miners Gala has survived as a symbol of defiance and a beacon of hope. It is now the largest trade union event in Europe and a wonderful celebration of community and working class life.
During the strike, fundraising events were held in London and around the country to keep the miners and their families going in their heroic struggle. Join us in 2025 to Stand Up For The Miners and keep their legacy alive!

• For more than a century, the Gala was funded by the working miners of the Durham coalfield. It is their gift to us all. Following the closure of the collieries, the DMA joined the major trade unions to create the not-for-profit Friends of Durham Miners Gala. Those who chip in are known as 'Marras' – a Durham miners' term for a trusted friend or colleague. Join our band of Marras here: https://www.friendsofdurhamminersgala.org/join_us

• Stand Up For The Miners is presented by No Sweat, the grassroots campaign that builds solidarity among workers' worldwide and makes the T-shirt that fights sweatshop labour! No Sweat is also the official supper to the Durham Miners Gala. Find out more about No Sweat here: https://nosweat.org.uk

• The 100 Club is the oldest independent venue worldwide. Throughout the decades, the venue has championed groundbreaking scenes, from the blues of Muddy Waters and BB King, though the mod stylings of The Who and The Kinks in the 60s, the birth of punk with the Sex Pistols, The Clash and Siouxsie & The Banshees ; then Oasis and Suede in the 90s, and more recently key shows for artists including The Horrors, Gallows and Kings Of Leon.
