Join us for a fascinating guided tour of St Peter’s Monastery, one of Malta’s most important historic religious sites.St Peter’s Monastery was founded in 1455 by Pope Callisto III on the site of a late medieval hospital. It is the oldest female monastery in Malta to have continuously occupied its original location. Over the centuries, the Benedictine monastery expanded to fill an entire detached block, with different wings dating from various historical periods.
The visit focuses on the monastery museum, located at the rear of the complex. It includes spaces dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, such as the old and new novice houses, work rooms, cells, service areas, and the eighteenth-century laundry in the basement. Important areas designed by architect Lorenzo Gafà in the 1680s, including the refectory and dormitories, remain private.
Above the entrance are the former rooms of Blessed Adeodata Pisani, whose spiritual writings inspired lasting devotion. The museum displays objects linked to her life and legacy.
Other sections explore daily life within the monastery, including the infirmary, dormitory, and novice houses. Exhibits include religious objects, artworks, domestic tools, and precious liturgical items.
Two tour groups will be hosted on the day, one at 2:00pm and another at 2:15pm.
The visit will be followed by tea in the monastery gardens, which are not usually accessible to the public.
