Spec-tacular Glass: Concerning A Pair Of Eyeglasses In The Nine Orders Of Angels Window And Ocular Devotion In Late Medieval York
About this Event

Tucked between two characters in the Nine Orders of Angels window at All Saints North Street is a man wearing a pair of folding spectacles. This bespectacled man however is not where he should be since a 1670 sketch of the window does not feature him there. Where could he come from then? Come and explore the possible origins of this beloved fragment of medieval glass, but also the special place of eyeglasses in late medieval York.

Our speaker, Naoki Matsumoto graduated with an MA in Medieval Studies at the university of York and is now pursuing a PhD at the university of Poitiers in France, on the topic of the representation of people with disabilities in medieval stained glass.

A volunteer-led tour will be available after the talk.

Please note: Most of the church is wheelchair accessible except for the chancel, high altar, and anchorhold (open for special events only), though some floors are uneven due to the historic nature of the building.

Attendance is free, though we suggest a donation of £5 to help us cover costs. Donations can be made by cash and card within the church.
