Southwark Pride Walking History Tour
About this Event
Join Dr Catherine Hahn on a walk during Pride to explore the working class queer history of Southwark.
Through places, stories and imagery, we will celebrate the rich tapestry of queer history in the area, including people whose actions changed society. Walking in their footsteps we will feel the significance of their legacy.
The tour presents queer history as a place of possibility, challenging sensationalist Victorian accounts of poverty and crime that served as cultural erasure. Walking it together, we will value its recovery. The tour takes three hours with stopping points.
We will share more details about the walk, including any access information, to ticket holders before the date.
The tour offers plenty of time to chat and mingle with other folks joining. Please bring enough water with you!
About the facilitator
Dr Catherine Hahn (she/her) is an artist and social researcher and has taught extensively in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths and Art History at the University of Kent. Catherine has facilitated collaborative art workshops for many years.
She draws on her personal experience and research on queer South London for the tour.
Accessibility
The walk will take three hours. On the walk we will go at a pace that would be considered comfortable for most people, where we will stop regularly.
There will be times when we may stand and talk and chairs won't be available.
The information shown on the walk will almost all be visual, and verbal descriptions will also be offered.
There will be extensive time to socialise and mingle and we will introduce ourselves to each other at the start. I will also ask questions as prompts, to support people interacting together.
