Source Materials: A Bioart Exhibit
About this Event
Source Materials traces matter back to its origin. The works begin as something ordinary: a shell, a spill, a scrap, a smear of soil, a living culture.
Biomaterial researchers are constantly sourcing materials, whether foraging, nurturing, or extracting. The act of sourcing becomes the act of making.
Each artist's inquiry draws on cultural lineage, personal experience, and individual relationships. The works search beyond questions of usability and production; they tell stories.
This exhibition captures the moment an artist encounters a material and becomes inexplicably infatuated. It glimpses under the veil of biology into a complex network of living cultures, waste streams, memory, and tools that alter perception.
Source Materials exhibits 14 artists, presenting biomaterial sculptures, woven pieces, household objects, film, and transformed waste. While each work may propose a use or a new material, they ultimately offer new perspectives on our relationship to overlooked materials.

About Genspace Biomaterials Studio (GBS):
The Biomaterials Studio is a community-driven biomaterial research group at Genspace. We explore, create, and innovate at the intersection between materials, biology, and design.
The Genspace Biomaterials Studio BioArtist Incubator supports artists who believe the materials we live with are worth reimagining. Each year, select Studio members and invited guests engage in extended lab access and mentorship to deepen their research into biological and regenerative materials. The Incubator culminates in an annual exhibition during NYC Climate Week, where artists share their work and invite broader conversations.
About Genspace:
Genspace is the world’s first community biology lab — a place where people of all backgrounds and identities can learn, create, and grow with the life sciences.
Since 2009, we have served the greater New York area by providing hands-on STEAM education programs for youth and adults, cultural and outreach events for the public, and a membership program to support New York’s community of creatives, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Our programs demystify scientific processes, provide a platform for innovation, and cultivate the next generation of life sciences leaders in emerging global technologies, such as biotechnology, neuroscience, epidemiology, genomics, and many more.
