Loyalty and authority stand as central values in every form of society. But such questioning as “to whom?” can quickly complicate a community’s experience. Antigone, by Sophocles, perhaps the most frequently performed of his writings, plays out the ultimate, essentially archetypal, consequences when irreconcilable conflict arises between opposing answers to that question.
While Sophocles wrote his play in the first century B.C., its themes are particularly relevant in this moment. We will engage them, first, to bring the drama to life by reading together selected portions, then through discussion. Audience members will be asked to take the characters in the reading.
KAREN NAIFEH, PhD and SAM NAIFEH, MD are both analyst members of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and maintain private practices in the San Francisco area. They have shared their interest in exploring the psychological and cultural relevance of the classics in a number of seminars and workshops over the years.
