“Old school taste, new school bass.” Smoked Out Soul is a future-forward funk collective, blending classic soul with modern bass music. The high-energy live show combines a DJ dance set with live horns, synths, guitar, drums and percussion – bridging the gap between Memphis grit and California cool; dusty vinyl and digital heat.What began as a weekly party at Monarch, a legendary club in San Francisco’s Mission District, has evolved into a full-fledged touring band, production team and record label. Smoked Out Soul continues to craft fresh groove and push boundaries in the studio and on stage.
Their genre-blending sound has lit up stages at Bonnaroo, Lightning in a Bottle, Outside Lands, Symbiosis, High Sierra Music Festival and Joshua Tree Music Festival, in addition to residencies at some of the Bay Area’s most iconic venues.
Helmed by producer/DJ/guitarist Zebuel, Smoked Out Soul features an all-star lineup of Bay Area talent, including drummer Paul Oliphant, co-producer/guitarist/synth wizard Ian McDonald (Disco E), percussionist Brandon Lee, saxophonist Chris Hoog, trumpeter Brendan Liu, and a rotating cast of special guests. The band made its triumphant return to the Crazy Horse back in November after many years away. The sold-out crowd was completely blown away and left searching for words in attempting to explain what they had witnessed. Smoked Out Soul was instantly reminded how much they love this place and to what extent the comfort factor brings out an even more adventurous side of their playing than usual.
