The Canadian Institute of Resources Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary invites you to the following free, hybrid workshop:
Historical Treaties - First Nations and Métis Rights and the Implications for All Albertans
In this workshop David Laidlaw will discuss, in the context of Alberta’s proposed separation from Canada, First Nations and Métis concerns for this based on:
• Historical Treaties 6, 7, and 8
• Alberta Act (1905)
• The Natural Resources Transfer Agreements (Alberta)
• Aboriginal Rights in Part II of the Constitution Act, 1982
• Alberta-Métis settlements accord (1989)
A question and answer period will follow the coffee break.
David K. Laidlaw, BSc. Computer Science and Economics, University of Calgary, 1985; LLB Dalhousie University 1988 and LLM University of Calgary 2013. After 20 years in private practice in Calgary, David returned to Law School and has been a CIRL Research Fellow since 2013. Having practiced briefly in Aboriginal law in the early 1990's his ongoing interest in the area has led him to explore Aboriginal law and its implications for Albertans and Canadians. He has research and authored reports commissioned by governments, First Nations and the Alberta Law Foundation. He has lectured on Indigenous rights at the University of Calgary and the law school in Dalhousie University, Halifax,N.S.
