An in-depth, on-bike outdoor bicycle class covering essential skills for everyday riding!
About this Event

Join our free Smart Cycling Part 2 on-bike workshop, where you'll get to sharpen your bike handling, boost your street safety and confidence, and learn crash-avoidance maneuvers in small groups under the guidance of a Certified League Cycling Instructor (LCI) By taking this class and passing the optional evaluation , you can also meet the prerequisite for becoming an LCI yourself. What the class covers:

  • ABC Quick Check
  • Starting, stopping, and shifting
  • Scanning, signaling, and turning
  • Crash avoidance maneuvers: quick stop, rock dodge, avoidance weave, quick turn
  • Group ride to put the knowledge and skills together on the road
  • Optional written and on-bike evaluation for those seeking LCI certification

All class participants will get to take home a reflective safety vest and a Smart Cycling Manual from the League of American Bicyclists. Participants who complete our post-class survey also have the option to enter a monthly raffle for a $25 Sports Basement gift card.

Prerequisites:

  1. Must be age 14+
  2. Must bring a well-maintained functional bicycle you can ride & helmet
  3. Must be able to bike in a straight line one-handed for 3+ seconds
  4. Must have completed Smart Cycling Part 1 or completed the League of American Bicyclists' online Smart Cycling, Everyday Riding Skills course or equivalent

Logistics:

  • Location: Stanford University 505 Broadway, Redwood City, CA 94063. Meet at the parking garage on Barron Ave. The group rides will be on nearby streets.
  • Getting there: The class location is near the Caltrain station and close to multiple bus stops. Car parking is also available for those who drive.
  • Bring a well-maintained functional bicycle and helmet, plus water, sunscreen, and money for lunch (or a packed lunch)

This class is provided to the public for at no cost for attendees courtesy of funding from Measures A & W by the TA, C/CAG, and Commute.org. We also thank Stanford Transportation and the University for the use of their campus.
