Slow Fashion Kids #5 & #6: Growing Your Sewing Skills
About this Event
Growing Your Sewing Skills – Parts 1 & 2
Building confidence, developing new techniques and creating with purpose.
Ready to take your sewing skills to the next level?
In this two-part workshop, held over two consecutive weeks, young makers (8-12yo) will build on the skills they've already learned as they create a larger, more detailed project, such as a drawstring bag or reversible reusable gift wrap—practical creations designed to be used, enjoyed and treasured for years to come.
As they work through their project, participants will strengthen their sewing machine skills while learning techniques that improve both the quality and finish of their work. Along the way they will:
- Pin and cut larger pattern pieces accurately
- Match and align fabrics
- Sew strong, neat seams with greater precision
- Reduce fabric bulk at corners and folds
- Top stitch for strength and a professional finish
- Close openings neatly
- Insert a drawstring (for drawstring bag projects)
Working over two sessions gives children the opportunity to slow down, practise new techniques and gain confidence through repetition while working more independently. They'll develop problem-solving skills, attention to detail and an understanding of how careful craftsmanship creates projects that are both beautiful and made to last.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will have completed a practical project they can use with pride, while developing the skills and confidence to take on future sewing projects, from accessories to garments and beyond. It's another exciting step on their slow fashion journey, inspiring them to create thoughtfully, value handmade items and continue making long after the workshop has finished.
Continue the adventure!
This two-part workshop is the last of our .
Each of the previous workshops can be enjoyed independently or as part of the complete six-part series, where children progressively learn to sew, repair, remake and personalise clothing while developing practical skills that will last a lifetime.
