About this Event

Sew Your First Project on a Sewing Machine

Imagine the pride on your child's face when they finish a project they've made themselves!

This fun and creative workshop introduces young makers to the rewarding world of slow fashion, where clothing is valued, creativity is celebrated, and learning practical skills helps shape a more sustainable future.

Using a sewing machine, children will create their very first small project, a scrunchie, while developing the essential techniques that form the foundation of garment making. Along the way, they'll learn to:

  • Pin a pattern onto fabric
  • Cut fabric accurately from a pattern
  • Sew strong, neat seams
  • Insert elastic

These valuable skills can be applied to future projects such as shorts, skirts and elastic-waisted pants, giving children the confidence to continue making and creating at home and or at further ReDress Hub workshops.

At The ReDress Hub, we believe every child can be part of the movement towards a more sustainable fashion future. When children make something with their own hands, they begin to understand the care, skill and resources that go into every garment. They become more thoughtful about the clothes they own, are more likely to cherish what they make, and gain the confidence to repair, remake and create rather than simply replace.

This workshop is about much more than learning to sew—it's about encouraging creativity, building confidence, solving problems, and inspiring the next generation of makers to think differently about fashion.

Whether your child dreams of designing clothes, loves hands-on creative activities, or simply enjoys making things, they'll leave with new skills, a finished project and plenty of inspiration for what they can create next.

Note: If a scrunchie is not something your child would wear as a hair piece, these make fabulous gifts and can have other uses such as armbands, to decorate a toy, or keep a pile of items together.

Continue the adventure!

This workshop is Part 4 of our . Each workshop can be enjoyed independently or as part of the complete six-part series, where children progressively learn to sew, repair, remake and personalise clothing while developing practical skills that will last a lifetime.
