Slopes Studio DIE-IN — 45 MINUTES FOR ALBERTA’S WATERSHEDS
When: 9:30 am, October 28
Where: Public sidewalk outside the Calgary Courts Centre
Wear black from head to toe. Be prepared to lie on the sidewalk for 45 minutes. This event is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Please arrive five minutes before the die-in begins so that you can get into position.
At 10 am, West Fraser will be seeking an extension of its injunction against Defenders of the Eastern Slopes and their defence camp in the Tecumseh Forest. The injunction names Colin Smith, Mike Sawyer, Mike Judd — whose inspirational concession speech is currently going viral — and Ronnie Small Legs. It also seeks an umbrella injunction covering ten unnamed Jane and John Does, potentially extending its reach to others supporting the named individuals.
Slopes Studio is taking to the public sidewalk outside the Courts Centre in a 45-minute die-in, following the proud tradition of ACT UP's direct-action protests in the 1980s. We are bringing that tradition to the defence of Alberta's watersheds.
The destruction of our watersheds is everybody's business.
Short-sighted economic projects are pursued as though an economy could exist independently of the natural systems that sustain it. But no viable economy can exist without functioning watersheds, healthy forests, living soils and the ecological relationships on which all life depends.
For 45 minutes, we will make that dependence visible. We will lie down in public space to draw attention to what is at stake in the courtroom — not only for the people named in the injunction, but for the Tecumseh Forest and the watersheds of Alberta's Eastern Slopes.
Please come and join us.
