TOVABorn Victor Adeolu Oriola, TOVA is a rising star of Canadian hip-hop. He has produced for artists like Oboise and ADEOLUWA, and his solo work earned him Contemporary Artist of the Year from the 2022 Saskatchewan Music Awards. 2023’s Everything, In Its Time is a swirling EP of piano-driven R&B that beckons listeners into a neo soul dream.
Corey Gulkin
Montreal’s Corey Gulkin has had a lot of ups and downs since being recognized as the 2013 laureate of the John Lennon Songwriting Grand Prize. From musical explorations of an abusive relationship to a neck injury that hindered their ability to play guitar, the indie singer-songwriter’s music has gone many tender places. Something of a genre chameleon, latest album Half Moon is a great showcase for their divine pipes and knotty guitar playing.
Haleluya Hailu
Pop-rock artist Haleluya Hailu says she wants to take back the term “manic pixie dream girl.” Inspired by the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and contemporaries like Willow and Clairo, she and her band stake their claim on the Gen Z revival of big, emotional rock music with new album Eternally Yours. Try opener “USELESS” and “MANIC PIXIE PACIFIST” for a taste of Hailu’s heart-on-sleeve anthems.
LATISHA
Massive-voiced R&B singer LATISHA croons over top of instrumentals by hip-hop and trap that sound as if they were imported from top talent in Los Angeles or Atlanta. But the star here is that voice. On “Intertwined,” she summons shades of Kelela’s dimly lit electronic epics, whereas her vocal patterns on “Pennies” sound like a fresh update on 2000s-era midtempo bangers.
