Join the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement as we continue celebrating the 15th anniversary season of our Six@Six lecture series! We are very excited to be granted use of the OneNKY Center so soon after it opens! The three leading causes of death in Kentucky are heart disease, overdose, and cancer, but virtually none of these deaths should be occurring. Only 6% of Kentuckians are uninsured, which is less than the United States as a whole, and Kentucky ranks above the national median in per capita government spending on health care programs. In fact, Kentucky ranks seventh in the nation for health care access, just behind Minnesota and just ahead of Pennsylvania. Still, Kentucky remains one of the least healthy areas in the country, besting only Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia. Its low rankings are comprised of things that that better health care access should prevent. Why do Kentuckians have such poor outcomes? Despite having insurance, more than one out of eight of adults in rNKY reported that they have forgone health care in the past year. Why is this? In this presentation, Dr. Valerie Hardcastle tries to explain why.
