Simon will be telling us about his latest research into Tyrwhitts Tramway. If you have ever wondered how the granite cut in Dartmoor’s quarries was transported off the Moor to Plymouth to be shipped all over the country for major construction works – this talk will tell you how horse drawn trams were used from around 1823. Thomas Tyrwhitt was a pioneer in many ways and this was one of his innovative ways of developing the Princetown area the town he founded and wanted to see prosper. The tramway went on to become the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway, and since the line was closed has become a popular walking route.
Simon has been a regular speaker at Tavistock Local History Society and it will be fascinating to hear about his latest research.
