Silver City, Interrupted
About this Event
Silver City! For over a century, a true Milwaukee place, a South Side bouquet. Throughout its life, the main street around 35th & National Ave has been like a community book report — small businesses owned by good, regular people with neighborhood-sized dreams. Cafes, restaurants, grocery stores, community spots, reflecting the people and histories at the moment.
Today, Silver City’s Main Street is under duress. It hasn’t been a wrecking ball, exactly, but current construction is leaving a significant mark.
This 90-minute walking tour will sample the buildings, small businesses and neighborhood that comprises Silver City, including stops on National Ave and Pierce St. The historically-focused tour will include discussions of culture, public art, neighborhood dynamics, community development and more. Come prepared to walk through construction, which may include a chance to see defunct streetcar tracks on National Ave.
The tour will explore a neighborhood landscape that has been significantly disrupted by construction. We will be crossing National Ave, which unfortunately, puts limits on our abilities to accommodate wheelchairs.
This tour is hosted by storyteller, artist, urban explorer, community organizer and historian, Adam Carr. Silver City is supported by VIA Community Development Corporation (VIA CDC), a partner in building strong, healthy neighborhoods where all of us can thrive.
