About this Event
Settler Visuality in Occupied East Jerusalem
Join us for a timely lecture by Prof. Alejandro Paz, followed by a discussion with Prof. Fadi Masoud.
Alejandro Paz is a University of Toronto Professor of Anthropology, who’s research focuses on the politics of language, media, and citizenship. His research is regionally based in Palestine and Israel. He has conducted ethnographic studies of non-citizen Latinos in Israel and settler tours of archaeological sites in occupied East Jerusalem. His 2018 book, Latinos in Israel: Language and Unexpected Citizenship, explores these themes.
In this talk, he will discuss the visual regime in the expanding East Jerusalem settlements.
Guest respondent: Fadi Masoud is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism and the Director of the Centre for Landscape Research at the University of Toronto. His research work focuses on advancing urban socio-ecological resilience, developing innovative tools like geospatial frameworks and novel urban codes. His book, Terra-Sorta-Firma: Reclaiming the Littoral Gradient (2020), documents the challenges and opportunities of urban waterfronts on reclaimed land.
This event is hosted by Daniels S E E D Collective, a student collective based out of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto. Our goal is to foster dialogue on the impacts of contemporary global conflict, displacement, and occupation as they intersect with critical environmental issues and relate to architecture, landscape, urban design, visual arts and forestry through student-led initiatives and events
