The Serial Readers Book Club is for stories that take more than one book to tell. Together, we'll make our way through a series from beginning to end, one volume at a time. You don't have to start with us or make it to every meeting—jump in whenever you'd like! This book club is led by the lovely Sammi Snow.
We're continuing Beth Brower's beloved The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, the charming, funny, and thoroughly addictive series told through the journals of an irrepressible young woman making a life for herself in Victorian London. This month, we're reading Volume 3, as Emma's world grows larger, her relationships deepen, and the mysteries of St. Crispian's continue to unfold.

By now, Emma is finding her footing in London—but a settled life doesn't necessarily mean a quiet one. The wonderfully eccentric cast surrounding her has become increasingly entangled in her daily affairs, while old questions remain unanswered and new curiosities give Emma plenty to record in the pages of her journal.

In Volume 3, the pleasures of the series begin to compound: characters who once seemed incidental take on new importance, friendships deepen, connections emerge, and details we've been collecting across the previous volumes begin to feel increasingly significant. At the center of it all is Emma, whose wit, independence, curiosity, and knack for finding herself in unusual circumstances make her journals so difficult to put down.

We'll talk about how Emma has changed since we first met her, the relationships we're most invested in, the mysteries and questions we're carrying forward, and one of the particular pleasures of reading a series together: getting to watch a fictional world accumulate history.
