On March 26, 2026 at 2:30 PM in Room 423 of the Safety Building, the sentencing hearing for Jeffrey Thompson will take place following his conviction for Instigation of Animal Fights – Training and Intentionally Mistreating Animals. Many of you may remember the 6 dogs who were at MADACC last year. They deserved safety, compassion, and a chance to have a better life. What they endured matters — and sentencing is where the court determines accountability.
We encourage supporters of animal welfare to attend the hearing and show the court that our community cares deeply about protecting animals from cruelty. A respectful presence in the courtroom sends a powerful message.
We encourage you to consider writing a respectful letter to the judge prior to sentencing, asking for the maximum sentence allowed under the law. Thoughtful letters emphasizing the seriousness of animal fighting, the suffering these dogs endured, and the need for meaningful consequences and deterrence can make a difference. We learned from the Michael Ellis case that personal hand-written letters go very far when the judge is making their decision.
On 02/18 there were multiple letters submitted on behalf of the defendant. It is critically important that the voices of those advocating for the animals are also heard.
Your letter should be addressed to:
Judge Michelle Havas

Room 423
