Location: Isis Lock, Oxford Canal, OX1 2RE

Note: This talk is timed to start at Isis Lock immediately following the which starts at St Barnabas Church at 14:00.

Description:

Join local historian and author, Catherine Robinson, as she delves into the hidden world of the boatpeople who lived and worked on the Oxford Canal in the 19th and 20th centuries. Living aboard their boats, and moving where the work took them, the boatmen and their families were shunned by wider British society. This led to distrust and animosity from those unfamiliar with the world of the canal.

Catherine talks about her personal efforts to get to know two of the last working boaters of the Oxford Canal, learn about their lives, and record their stories. She covers material from some of the first wharves in Oxford, and the day to day grind that the families had to put in just to survive.
