Searching for Seaweed - 2026

Learn the rules of recreational seaweed harvesting, edible seaweed identification, and some cooking tips!

Join the Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee and WA State Department of Fish and Wildlife from 12:45-2:45pm on Tuesday, April 21, at Point Hudson! Learn about the different types of edible seaweeds, where to find them, how to harvest safely and sustainably, and the basic rules and regulations to follow to help ensure seaweed harvests into the future. We'll first meet with WDFW habitat biologist, Reed Stevens, for a short presentation then search for seaweed on the beach!

Directions, parking, and other details will be sent to all registrants. You will need waterproof boots for the event, and a current WDFW shellfish/seaweed license and bucket if you plan to collect seaweed to take home.

WDFW shellfish/seaweed licenses can be purchased online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov or at one of the following retail outlets: Port Ludlow Marina, Olympic Equipment Rentals in Port Hadlock, Brinnon General Store, or Quimper Mercantile, Henery Hardware, or The Fishin' Hole/Fuel Dock at Boat Haven in Port Townsend. Children 14 and under do not need a license.

This public event is free, however, space is limited!
