Join us for a special screening of NT Live: Hamlet (2026) in partnership with the Sainsbury Centre and their current exhibition series ‘Can We Stop Killing Each Other?’
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr Sophie Butler, Sian Evans, and Professor Richard J. Hand.
Olivier Award-winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) is Hamlet in this fearless, contemporary take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. Trapped between duty and doubt, surrounded by power and privilege, young Prince Hamlet dares to ask the ultimate question – you know the one. National Theatre Deputy Artistic Director, Robert Hastie (Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Operation Mincemeat) directs this sharp, stylish and darkly funny reimagining.
The current multiple-exhibition season at the Sainsbury Centre - Can We Stop Killing Each Other? - explores the nature of violence and conflict in theatre, film and culture. How can art help us build compassion, understanding, dialogue and healing?
The exhibition Eyewitness asks why people across the world are so fascinated by the dramatisation of killing on stage and screen and in art - with a particular focus on Shakespearean tragedies and the fatal flaw. King Lear, Othello, Romeo and Juliet and other plays are explored through paintings, collectables and toy theatres - including three paintings of Ophelia in conversation with other characters in Hamlet.
The panelists;
Dr Sophie Butler is a lecturer in Early Modern Literature at University of East Anglia (UEA) with specialisms including but not limited to Shakespeare, book and library history, and women's writing.
Sian Evans is a playwright, screenwriter, librettist and translator as well as a lecturer for the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at the UEA.
Professor Richard J. Hand is Professor of Drama and Scriptwriting at the UEA. He is the founding co-editor of the Journal of Adaptation in Film and Performance and has written extensively on adaptation, horror studies, European theatre, radio drama, and popular culture.
Event duration: 210 mins.
