American Legion Auxiliary Unit 71 will host a safeTALK Suicide Alertness Training on Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 12pm to 4 p.m. at Citizens Fire Company 245 Citizens Way Charles Town, West Virginia 25414.
The training is open to members of the community ages 15 and older. The cost is $40 per participant, and pre-registration is required. Registration and payment are available through Zelle or Zeffy.
Unit 71 is bringing the training to the community as an opportunity for individuals to become more aware of the signs that someone may be experiencing thoughts of suicide and to learn how to connect that person with appropriate resources and support.
The program can be especially beneficial for those who work with youth, Veterans and military families, and individuals who may encounter people experiencing a crisis. However, organizers emphasize that the training is intended for anyone who wants to become better prepared to recognize when someone may need help.
SafeTALK teaches participants to recognize potential warning signs, engage someone who may be struggling and help connect that individual with resources that can provide further assistance. Participants will also receive information about resources that may be available within their communities.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 71 believes suicide prevention is a community responsibility and that individuals do not have to be mental health professionals to make a meaningful difference. Becoming more alert to the signs that someone may be struggling and knowing where to turn for assistance can provide an important connection at a critical time.
“Everyone is vital, and each of us has the potential to help prevent the loss of another life.”
Through this training, Unit 71 hopes to provide participants with knowledge, resources and the confidence to become advocates for suicide prevention and awareness in their families, workplaces and communities.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 71 encourages community members, educators, youth leaders, Veterans organizations, first responders and others who regularly interact with individuals experiencing difficult or crisis situations to consider attending.
